A MATTER OF THE SPIRIT

A Matter of the Spirit is an attempt to speak about the sacredness and fragility of matrimony. The relationship between a man and a woman is compared in the Holy Scriptures to the relationship of Christ and the Church: the Church as the Bride of Christ. Genesis suggests that the union of man and woman in matrimony is like the union of the Triune God: a perfect unity and plurality at the same time. In the bridal gown I incorporated several symbols that are essential to maintain and protect the earthly union. Salt is grounding, preserving, and adds “flavor”. The sheep and raw lamb's fleece lining of the gown have to do with the indwelling of Christ, humility, and forgiveness. The gold wire refers to God's holiness and our dependence on Him. A small digital recorder offers the viewer the choice to interact with the work. The words “I did not love you when I married you—your love humbled me.” speak of the difficult and profound journey that is sacred and yet fragile.
